VEGANS SPECIAL 2
Knowledge
is your best friend when transitioning to a vegan diet. Being educated
about what you are eating (and why) makes it a snap to make smart
choices.
Explore your local library and get online. Find out what
veganism is all about and what resonates
most with you. Is it the health
benefits? The environmental causes? The animal welfare? Deciding what
makes becoming vegan important to you will help in the transition phase,
reminding you to stay on track, until eventually your new lifestyle
seems second nature.
There are many vegans out there who also
enjoy community, so if you’re seeking support or find that you achieve
goals best in a group, check out vegan forums online or local meet-ups
in your area. Also, festivals, conferences, and vegan conventions are
great ways to make new friends who will be supportive of your dietary
changes. Rent a few films such as Food Inc. or Supersize Me to get your
motivation up. And, visit your local food markets and start exploring
the isles. Ask questions if you are unsure what a food item is for.
Become a vigilant label reader and keep an eye out for the “V” symbol on
many items denoting that they are suitable for vegans. You may be
pleasantly surprised at the variety of foods you can enjoy.
Taking
steps to include more plants in your own diet is a positive change, so
keep a good attitude throughout, regardless of any slip-ups. Go easy on
yourself and be proud of your progress. Soon you may find the produce
aisles of your grocery stores and local Farmers Markets to be your
favorite places to shop!
